The results of a DNA analysis, left the lab
staff a bit perplexed; they had just finished a DNA test on set
of twins, including their parents. The results showed the twins
to have the same mother, but the paternal alleles corresponded
to two different people. |

Twins Can Have
Different Father
One of the first reported cases was described by
John Archer, an american physician, in 1810;
Archer described the birth of two children by a
white woman, who had sex with a white man and a
black man within a short span of time; one child
was white and the other one of mixed race. So we
can see that these events have occurred, and in
this case one can tell by the phenotypic traits
(color) but in cases of parents of the same race,
only analysis of the genotype (DNA test) can tell
us if super fecundation occurred. The analyses
were repeated two more times, and the two times
showed the same results; aside from women on
fertility treatment, where egg production is
induced and multiple eggs can be released;
normally women release a single egg and it is a
rare event that they release more than one egg
within the same menstrual cycle, but it does
happen, and it is even rarer that two eggs can be
fertilized within a 72 hours period. |

Twin DNA Tests
Certainly it was a great surprise and a great
embarrassment to this mother to finally admit that
at the time she had intimacy with her husband,
causing the first fecundation and 2 days later she
had intimacy with a second man, whose sperm
fertilized the second child. A DNA test can reveal
with a high degree of accuracy the paternity or
maternity of a given child. |

Fecundation
A number of super fecundation cases have now been
reported in the literature, around the world and a
number of scientific articles have been now
published describing them Very frequently our
scientists run into these kinds of unexpected
results; it is not our job to pass judgment on
anyone, only to provide as accurate and
trustworthy results as possible; as an AABB
accredited lab we follow very strict procedures
and protocols to ensure the reliability of our
results. |
