Prenatal testing is testing for diseases or conditions in a fetus or embryo before it is born. The aim is to detect birth defects such as neural tube defects, Down syndrome, chromosome abnormalities, genetic diseases and other conditions. It can also be used to determine the sex of the unborn baby or use for paternity analysis. Diagnostic prenatal testing can be by invasive methods or non-invasive methods.

Fetal Versus Maternal
Some screening tests performed on the mother are intended to detect traits or characteristics of the fetus. Others detect conditions in the mother that may have an adverse effect on the fetus, or that threaten the pregnancy. There are three purposes of prenatal diagnosis: (1) to enable timely medical or surgical treatment of a condition before or after birth, (2) to give the parents the chance to abort a fetus with the diagnosed condition, and (3) to give parents the chance to "prepare" for a baby with a health problem or disability, or for the likelihood of a stillbirth. |

Amniocentesis
Amniocentesis is a prenatal test that allows your healthcare practitioner to gather information about your baby's health and development from a sample of your amniotic fluid. This is the fluid that surrounds your baby in the uterus. The most common reason to have an "amnio" is to determine whether a baby has a genetic disorder or a chromosomal abnormality, such as Down syndrome. Only amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS) can diagnose these problems in the womb. |
