Genetic Reconstruction
Genetic Reconstruction
In genetic reconstruction, a complicated series of DNA tests that can often be performed when an alleged father is unavailable for paternity testing and other genetic tests to determine whether or not a child is related to the alleged father’s close relatives. It is an indirect way to determine family relationships when an alleged father is not available for a paternity test. Results of genetic reconstruction may be used as proof in Social Security benefit and other inheritance claims.
Tested Parties
In genetic reconstruction, DNA profiles of the child and the mother are compared with profiles of at least two of the alleged father’s close relatives. A close relative can be a biological parent, full brother, or full sister of the alleged father. Because of the complexity of the test, the mother’s participation is required during genetic reconstruction.
Sample Collection
We will send you a Beta Self-Collection kit containing everything you need to collect DNA samples. Sample collection is painless and simple. You will use buccal swabs, which are like long Q-tips, to collect loose cheek cells by rubbing against the inner cheek.

The results of genetic reconstruction testing will present a likelihood ratio that means either there is a high likelihood that the child is related to the tested family members or there is a low likelihood that the child is related to the tested family members. Because the alleged father is not tested, we cannot make any claims about whether he is the biological parent of the child.
